Help:Characters

Semantic Stargate Wiki — The semantic reference regarding the Stargate universe.
Jump to navigation Jump to search

On Semantic Stargate Wiki, characters are classified with appropriate semantic properties. They are also classified by series, on its globality.

Creation of a character article[edit source]

When you create a new article for a character, you can prefill this article with all needed sections and templates. For this, you just have to click on the "Character" button located below the line entitled "Available preloaded article texts". Very simple. If some sections are unnecessary, just delete them.

Classification[edit source]

All characters who appear in episodes are classified as either a main character, a recurring character, a "one shot" character, or a minor character. In movies, the classification is slightly different: main character, supporting character, or minor character. The characters are classified by series/movies, and then, on different sub-categories shown below. This classification is here to facilitate the navigation in the wiki.

Main characters (series and movies)[edit source]

  • For Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, in each episode's title sequence are written all the names of the main cast. The characters they portray are considered as main characters (with the exception of the extra characters they could also play). Even if the actor has played just one season as main cast, his character should be considered as main character as well.
  • For Stargate Universe, the main character's list stops when we see "Guest Starring" on the screen.
  • For Stargate, the movie, that's quite simple; just Jack O'Neill and Daniel Jackson, matching the two star names, Kurt Russell and James Spader, at the top of the film poster.
  • For Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, the main characters are those whom the portrayer's names appear at the top of the DVD cover before "Guest Starring" or "Special Guest Starring".
How to classify?
in the {{Infobox Character}} template, put "Ma" as value in the corresponding field(s) (movie, SG1, AOT, SC, SGA or SGU). A property entitled Main character of with the name of the series/movie will appear.

Recurring characters (series)[edit source]

If a non-main character appears at least twice throughout a series, he will be classified as a recurring character in this particular series.

How to classify?
In the {{Infobox Character}} template, put "Re" as value in the corresponding field(s) (SG1, SGA or SGU). A property entitled Recurring character of with the name of the series will appear.

"One-shot" characters (series)[edit source]

A "one-shot" character is a character whom portrayer's name appears only once throughout a series in the "Guest Starring" credits. If an actor appears twice but plays a different character, the two characters should be considered as "one shot". Example; Gerard Plunkett has portrayed two different characters, Tuplo and Nem. Plunkett has appeared twice as Tuplo, and juste once as Nem. Tuplo should be classified as recurring character, but Nem as "one shot" character.

How to classify?
In the {{Infobox Character}} template, put "os" as value in the corresponding field(s) (SG1, SGA or SGU). A property entitled One shot character of with the name of the series will appear.

Supporting characters (movies)[edit source]

A supporting character is a character whom portrayer's name appears in the "Guest Starring" credits.

How to classify?
In the {{Infobox Character}} template, put "Su" as value in the corresponding field(s) (movie, AOT or SC). A property entitled Supporting character of with the name of the movie will appear.

Minor characters (series and movies)[edit source]

The minor characters should regroup all the remaining characters, whom actor's names appear (or not) in the ending credits.

How to classify?
In the {{Infobox Character}} template, put "Mi" as value in the corresponding field(s) (movie, SG1, AOT, SC, SGA or SGU). A property entitled Minor character of with the name of the series/movie will appear.

Other classifications[edit source]

Canon classifications[edit source]

Deceased characters[edit source]

Once a character is confirmed to have died in Stargate, his page should be updated. Past tense can be used in the character's lead section. The character's portal entry should be italicized by adding |deceased = true, to clearly show that the character is deceased.

Non-canon classifications[edit source]

Stargate Infinity characters
This classification regroups only all Stargate Infinity characters.
RPG characters
This classification regroups only all Stargate Roleplaying Game characters.
"Bill McKay" characters
This classification regroups only all characters from the novels written by Bill McKay based on the Stargate movie
Roc characters
This classification regroups only all characters from the novels published by Roc.
Fandemonium characters
This classification regroups only all characters from the novels published by Fandemonium.
etc.

Navigation[edit source]

Portals[edit source]

Portals of characters should be sorted by series/movies and by character type. In all portals but the main characters', characters should be alphabetically listed. Most of the characters portals (recurring/"one shot"/minor) have now automatic semantic templates that will update automatically (may be after refreshing the cache memory) when a new article is created.

Navboxes[edit source]

A new character navigational bar, or navbox, is created for each series/movie. Navbox entries should be alphabetically sorted. As for the portals, most of the templates are semantic and will be updated automatically (may be after refreshing the cache memory) when a new article is created.

Images[edit source]

Infobox images[edit source]

Infobox images should be in smartphone format (i.e. having a vertical 1:1.25 ratio) and focused on the character's face only.

Images added inside the article[edit source]

Those image should respect the movie/series ratio (i.e. 2.35:1 for the movie and 1.78:1 for the series and Direct-to-DVD movies). They should be added as thumbnails throughout the article's main text or as galleries at the end of the article if the article is small.

Content/sections[edit source]

Each character's article is subdivided in several parts:

  • The Infobox section
  • The Introduction's text (before the TOC)
  • The Biography section
  • The Character's evolution section
  • The Notes section
  • The Behind the scene section
  • The See also section
  • The External links section
  • The References section
  • The Appearances section

In some case, some extra sections can be added, like "Personality" and "Gallery".

Infobox[edit source]

This template should gather all known indications regarding the character. Remember, this is just a summary and all indications written here should be developped within the article text.

Introduction[edit source]

This text is written to briefly introduce the character. Only very important events related to the character (like change of command, major life events, etc.) should be written in a very concise style. The character's name, as well as some common nicknames should be bolded.

Example:

Colonel Samantha Carter, Ph.D (born December 29, 1968), commonly called Sam, is a US Air Force pilot and engineer. She is a theoretical astrophysicist and expert in advanced technologies, especially alien. She became part of the Stargate project in 1993 and was a member of the flagteam called "SG-1" in 1997 for more than ten years. In 2007, she became the operational leader of the Atlantis expedition in the Pegasus galaxy for one year. She helped in the developpment of many Earth technology breakthroughs, including Naquadah generators, spaceships and weaponry among many others. In 2009, she was given command of the last built Daedalus-class warship, George Hammond.

Biography[edit source]

This section should contain all character-related events occuring before the character's appearance within the movies/series, like birth, childhood, beginning of carreer, etc. If this section is long, it can be divided in several subsections (Childhood, private life, military career, etc.). Nothing related to events occuring within the series should appear here. This section should be of course sourced like this (bolded here for emphasis):

[Samantha] Carter, daughter of Jacob Carter and an unnamed mother, is born on December 29, 1968. His father named her Samantha as he wanted a boy. She has a younger brother, Mark. When she was a kid, she played with the Major Matt Mason astronaut doll (SG1: "Entity", "Seth", "Forsaken", "Children of the Gods").
When she was twelve, her mother died in a car accident as her father didn't pick her up when he was supposed to because he was to dedicated to his military carreer in the US Air Force. Carter blamed her father for that for many years (SG1: "Seth", "The Devil You Know").

Character's evolution[edit source]

The "Character's evolution" section should be divided by episode. In the case of main characters, as it would become a very huge article, a season-by-season summary should be written with a wikilink located below the section title to a more detailled page dedicated to the season. There is no need to source here as the reference is already written in subsection title.

Notes[edit source]

This section should contain all character-related stuff, like specific picture links, military number, inconsistencies, and so on. This note section should be bulleted and sourced.

Behind the scene[edit source]

This section should contain all production notes (like casting call, etc.) and anecdoctes related to this character. As the previous section, it should be bulleted and sourced as well.

See also[edit source]

This section should have a bulleted list of all articles directly related to the character, like family, alternate version, teammates, etc. All links should only lead to a Semantic Stargate Wiki article (internal link).

External links[edit source]

If needed, this section should contain a bulleted list of external character-related articles, like Wikipedia, Gateworld, Stargate SG-1 Solutions, and MGM official websites. This section SHALL NOT contain any Stargate Wikia link.

References[edit source]

This section gathers all <ref>Text here</ref> notes written throughout the article.

Appearances[edit source]

This section is a huge template that tags all the character's appearances. The purpose of this section is to reference all appearances in semantic data. One can put several kind of indications to fit all cases. Each episode has its own field and can be filled like this;

  • yes or any other letter/word but note1 or note2: this character appeared in that very episode.
  • note1 or note2: a particular event occured for this character and is filled inside the note1 or note2 fields
    • body: this character is deceased in the episode
    • mention: this character is mentioned only in the episode (do not fill this one if the character appears physically in an other episode).
    • del: this character appears only in the episode's deleted scenes
